How to estimate the power of an appliance

In this article we will talk about how to find and estimate the power of an electrical device.

One of the most important steps in using a portable power station is knowing the power (wattage) of the devices that will be connected to the AC outlet.

 

There are three ways to find the power consumption of an appliance:

Method #1: Reading from the Nameplate

Every electrical device and appliance we use have a technical specifications at the bottom or on it’s back. You will find the device power in that sticker.

For example, the photo below shows a nameplate for a blender. It shows the rated power of the blender as 800W.

 

Method #2: Calculation of the power from data in the Nameplate

If you are unable to find the wattage mentioned in the nameplate, then you can calculate it as:

Power (Wattage)= Current×Voltage

For example, the nameplate shown below is for a microwave, where the wattage is not mentioned but voltage and current. So we can calculate the power consumptions as:

Power= 120V × 10A = 1200W (1.2kW)

 

 

Method#3:

If you can’t find any electrical information about the device, then you can use an energy meter to measure the power consumption of any device.
